Types of protection
Asylum
WhatAsylum is a protection status given to people who left their homes because of founded fear that their lives were in danger due to their race, religion, nationality, political beliefs or affiliation to a special social group.
During border control at the border crossing you say you want to seek asylum. If you are already on the Croatian territory, you express your intention at the police department, the police station and the reception centre for foreigners, and in exceptional circumstances at the reception centre for asylum seekers. The police will take your data, photo and fingerprints. Soon after you arrive you will have the first interview. In general, the interview will take place 15 days after your status registration in the Ministry of the Interior, but due to extraordinary circumstances, such as epidemiological situation, it may take longer. You have the right to get legal advice and translator.

Subsidiary protection
WhatSubsidiary protection is granted if the person does not meet the criteria for receiving asylum, but there is reasonable risk that if the person returns to his/her country of origin, he/she will suffer serious injustice due to threats of death penalty or execution, torture, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment and serious, individual threat to life due to indiscriminate violence in situations of international or internal armed conflict.
The procedure is the same as for asylum. You need to request international protection.
